ZINC'S VALUE PROPOSITION

Demand for batteries is increasing as the energy and transportation industries embrace decarbonization. And while the industry may feel well established, it's still relatively early days when it comes to influencing the mix of batteries deployed. Governments and industry can derisk this coming wave of demand by ensuring that it meets the needs through diverse technologies. One of the challenges to diversifying supply is that almost all of the largest and best-funded battery suppliers are focused on a single technology, lithium. The good news is that the last couple of years have seen a rise in awareness of alternate battery chemistries, though they've yet to make much of a dent in volume. But that is set to change, and zinc-based technologies offer arguably the most attractive range of options across a broad spectrum of operating cycles.

.

R

Zinc batteries are flexible, capable of long cycle life, high specific energy, and power.

R

They have a wide operating temperature and require minimal upkeep to maintain performance and safety.

R

Across a range of applications zinc batteries prove to be the lowest cost option available.

R

Zinc batteries are non-toxic and made from abundant and inexpensive materials, available through diverse and reliable supply chains.

R

At the end of their useful life, they can be recycled and made into new batteries.

LEARN MORE

IZA launched the Zinc Battery Initiative in 2020 to promote rechargeable zinc batteries’ remarkable story and encourage further adoption of these products. ZBI members are the leading companies in the industry – each with proprietary technologies. Yet, all share zinc as a common base, producing high-performance, safe, and environmentally sustainable batteries.  We've created a dedicated micro-site for those interested in learning more about zinc batteries.
